Floods in Guangxi force evacuation of 54,000 people
In China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region, downpours caused by Typhoon Narra flooded residential buildings and shops. According to China’s state television, 54,000 people were relocated due to rising water levels in the region. Channel NewsAsia published a Reuters report.
Evacuation in Guangxi
In the city of Chongzuo, authorities evacuated more than 15,000 residents after the water level exceeded the record set in 2008. River water flooded part of the city, reaching the roofs of buildings and power lines in some places.
On Monday, Chongzuo authorities ordered all businesses and tourist sites to cease operations. Evacuated residents were also urged not to return to high-risk areas.
Typhoon Narra remained over the Beibu Gulf, also known as the Gulf of Tonkin, in the northwestern part of the South China Sea for several days. It brought heavy rainfall to Guangxi and the neighboring provinces of Hainan and Guangdong. State media forecast heavy downpours through Wednesday in parts of Vietnam, as well as Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Fujian.

Typhoon Saudel near Japan and Taiwan
Meanwhile, the moderate-strength Typhoon Saudel was moving toward southern Japan and northern Taiwan. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of destructive wind gusts, very strong winds and high waves near the southwestern islands of Okinawa Prefecture.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said Saudel was expected to pass north of the island and bring rainfall to its north from late Thursday through Friday. According to the agency’s forecast, the typhoon would gradually weaken, but the timing and scale of its impact on rainfall remained uncertain. It was also forecast to reach the coast of China’s Fujian Province from late Thursday to early Friday.
In southern and eastern Taiwan, another tropical depression caused flooding in the cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung. Taiwanese authorities reported one death and four people missing. Nearly one meter of rainfall fell in Kaohsiung over three days, from Sunday to Tuesday.
