The Fuego volcano has erupted in Guatemala; evacuations have begun – Mirror

One of the world's most dangerous volcanoes—Fuego—has become active in Guatemala. The volcano has begun spewing lava flows and plumes of smoke, prompting authorities to declare an orange alert and begin evacuating residents from potentially dangerous areas.

Local residents have already begun to be evacuated from settlements located at the foot of the dangerous volcano.

Fuego is located in the Sierra Madre mountain range, approximately 16 kilometers west of one of Guatemala’s most popular tourist destinations—Antigua. The eruption came as no surprise to locals, as the volcano is known for its virtually continuous activity.

Every 15 to 20 minutes, there are small emissions of ash and smoke, as well as minor explosions. However, major eruptions are less frequent—the one recorded today was the third in the last four years and the ninth since 2015.
