Several large wildfires are being fought in California
Firefighters in California are trying to contain several large wildfires, including the Timber Fire on the Big Sur coast and the Bug Fire near the city of Reno on the California-Nevada border. Hot and dry weather in the western United States is fueling the spread of the fires, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, according to Al Jazeera English.
According to Cal Fire, as of Saturday, the Timber Fire had burned 4,655 acres, or 1,884 hectares, and was 12% contained. The fire began on August 8; its cause has not yet been determined. The fire threatens 503 structures in the Big Sur area.
Approximately 1,811 people, 192 fire trucks, and nine helicopters have been deployed to fight the Timber Fire. Crews are clearing dry vegetation in the fire’s path. The rescuers’ work is complicated by the region’s steep slopes and narrow roads. State parks near the fire’s epicenter have been closed, and authorities have issued evacuation orders for certain sections of Highway 1.

The rapidly spreading Bug Fire near Reno has burned approximately 93,381 acres, or 37,790 hectares. It is 58% contained. Wosh County Sheriff Darin Balaam stated that at least 4,000 people were forced to leave the area due to the fire, including residents of a facility for people with memory impairments.
The National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) stated that budget cuts and layoffs during Donald Trump’s presidency have increased uncertainty for federal firefighters. According to the union, the DOGE initiative led to the layoff of more than 6,000 U.S. Forest Service employees, including thousands of skilled wildland firefighters. The NFFE also warned of possible transfers or layoffs of other employees and the closure of research laboratories critical to wildfire preparedness and response.
According to Cal Fire, the Timber Fire was one of 125 new fires reported in the U.S. as of Saturday. A total of 29,363 personnel have been deployed to respond to fires across the country.
