In Kyrgyzstan, former head of security service accused of attempting to seize power — Reuters

In Kyrgyzstan, law enforcement authorities have officially charged eight people in connection with a case involving the planning of a violent seizure of power.

Reuters reports this.

The main figure in the investigation is Kamchibek Tashiev, the former head of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) and a longtime ally of current President Sadyr Zhaparov.

According to Reuters, Tashiev is charged not only with conspiracy to seize power but also with abuse of office.

His lawyer, Ikramidin Aitkulov, confirmed that the case has already been referred to court, but the hearings will be held in closed session due to the imposed classification.

“The trial will be closed, and any media coverage of the details is strictly prohibited,” the human rights activist noted.

Tashiev is not currently in custody; he was released on his own recognizance, although the charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The political duo of Zhaparov and Tashiev had effectively ruled the country since the 2020 revolution.

However, in February 2026, an unexpected split occurred: the president dismissed Tashiev from all his posts while he was undergoing medical treatment in Germany.

The official reason given for the dismissal was the need to “prevent a split in society.”

Following Tashiev’s removal, interrogations of his inner circle began.

Among those summoned for questioning by the security services are the former speaker of parliament and a number of former officials from the security sector. The names of the other seven defendants in the coup case have not yet been disclosed.

Kyrgyzstan is suing Russia over the failure to issue health insurance policies to the families of migrant workers

Earlier in Kyrgyzstan, an employee of the “Russian House” and three of her accomplices were detained; they were involved in recruiting mercenaries for the occupying army.

The Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised its citizens who “have no compelling reasons to travel to Russia” to temporarily refrain from doing so.
