Chisinau has dismissed as propaganda claims of widespread interest among Transnistrians in Russian passports
Moldovan authorities have cast doubt on reports that tens of thousands of residents of unrecognized Transnistria allegedly wish to obtain Russian citizenship through a simplified procedure.
Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Civer stated that Chisinau has no reliable data on the number of such applicants and does not trust the statistics disseminated by representatives of Tiraspol and the Russian Embassy.
According to him, the figures may be significantly inflated, as the Transnistrian administration has repeatedly resorted to manipulation in its information campaigns.
Civer also expressed surprise that the reported number of potential recipients of Russian passports currently stands at around 36,000 people.
In the Moldovan official’s view, the campaign to simplify the granting of Russian citizenship to Transnistrian residents is politically motivated and aimed at countering the country’s reintegration processes.
He called these actions a propaganda campaign designed to create the impression of growing support for Russia among the population of the occupied region.
