France has fined the Shein platform for violating consumer rights — Le Monde

France’s Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control has imposed two financial penalties totaling 22 million euros on the well-known Chinese online platform Shein.

The French regulator issued the decision on Wednesday, June 3, following the discovery of a number of significant violations related to the protection of online shoppers’ rights.

The first and largest fine, amounting to €16.7 million, relates to serious shortcomings in customer information.

The agency’s experts found a complete absence of mandatory legal information in the email template sent to customers to confirm their orders.

These messages from Shein did not clearly state the final price of the product, the seller’s official name, or the exact delivery time, although this information later appeared directly in the user’s personal account.

The second fine, amounting to 5.7 million euros, relates to the disregard of basic European commercial standards.

The French regulator accused the popular marketplace platform of failing to comply with the legal 14-day right to cancel an order, which is guaranteed to all online customers.

In addition, Shein was found guilty of a complete lack of mandatory information regarding the environmental quality of its products.

This was reported by Le Monde.
