China flies the world’s heaviest cargo drone for the first time

On March 31, the heavy transport unmanned aerial vehicle “Chanying-8” completed its first successful demonstration flight at Zhengzhou Airport in Henan Province, China. This drone is recognized as the heaviest multi-purpose cargo UAV globally, marking a significant advancement in aviation technology.

According to CCTV, the drone weighs 3.5 tonnes, matching its maximum payload capacity. It measures 17 metres in length with a wingspan of 25 metres. Developed by the defense conglomerate China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco), it is designed for dual military and civilian purposes.

The drone can take off and land on a runway shorter than 500 metres, enhancing its operational flexibility. It is suitable for use in high-altitude regions, islands, and rugged terrains and can cover distances up to 3,000 kilometres when fully loaded.

China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco) is a leading Chinese defense firm specialising in military equipment, armaments, and unmanned systems. The company merges innovative technology with the needs of both military and civilian sectors.

The launch of the Chanying-8 opens new possibilities for cargo transportation in hard-to-reach areas and is expected to enhance China’s military and civilian UAV capabilities substantially.

This achievement signals a major technological breakthrough with promising prospects for increased efficiency and broader applications of such drones in the near future.
