China opens museum dedicated to pterosaurs — ECNS
A museum of pterosaurs — flying reptiles that lived alongside dinosaurs — has opened in the city of Hami in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. As ECNS reports, citing the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is the world’s first museum entirely dedicated to pterosaurs.
Museum in the Yardang Geopark
The pterosaur museum in Hami is located in the Yardang Geopark. Its total area is about 8,000 square meters, of which 4,600 square meters are allocated for exhibitions.

The museum has five themed exhibition halls and two spaces for working with visitors. According to Wang Xiaolin, a researcher at the institute, the six oval halls are located at different heights and resemble a group of pterosaur eggs when viewed from above. The building’s silvery-white facade resembles a base for interstellar research.
Fossil remains of the region
Hami is called the “hometown of pterosaurs.” The region has pterosaur fossil remains that are rare on a global scale, as well as characteristic yardang landforms. According to preliminary estimates, this area preserves remains representing hundreds of millions of individual pterosaurs and other ancient vertebrates.
