A new species of monkey with bright orange lips has been officially discovered in the Congo
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, scientists have confirmed the existence of a new species of monkey with distinctive bright-orange lips. The discovery is one of the most significant in the study of African primates in recent decades.
The new species was discovered in the tropical forests of Lomami National Park. The unusual animal was first photographed back in 2008, but it was only after repeated observations and comprehensive research—using photographic evidence, audio recordings, and genetic analysis—that scientists confirmed it was a distinct species.
The primate was named Colobus congoensis in honor of the country where it was found. It belongs to the colobus genus—arboreal herbivorous monkeys that play an important role in seed dispersal in forest ecosystems.
Researchers note that these animals are very shy and spend most of their time high up in the tree canopy. Local residents call them Likveli.

Scientists speculate that the orange coloration of the lips may be used for individual recognition or during mating behavior. At the same time, the new species is already considered potentially vulnerable due to poaching and habitat loss.
Researchers plan to continue studying the population size, the animals’ behavior, and their role in the ecosystem.
