Chile has begun revoking the citizenship of children of Russian nationals en masse due to birth tourism
Chilean authorities have begun a mass revocation of citizenship for children born in the country to Russian parents who arrived under the so-called “birth tourism” scheme.
According to CIPER Chile, entries regarding the citizenship of 62 minors have already been revoked in the national registry. In addition, in March, the National Immigration Service reported another 24 cases in which children of parents with “transit foreigner” status were illegally registered as Chilean citizens.
On April 24, Chile’s Civil Registry Service launched an administrative investigation into these cases. Under the country’s constitution, children of foreigners with “transit” status do not automatically acquire Chilean citizenship.
Most of these cases were recorded in Viña del Mar, where at least two companies operate that organize “birth tourism” for Russian citizens. According to the publication, one of them claims to have helped more than 200 people obtain Chilean citizenship, while the other claims that more than 2,000 families have used its services.
