Video: A roll of film that had been lying in the Alps for 40 years was found

In the Italian region of Frasassi, geologist Lorenzo Rossetti found a roll of Kodak film in a mountain gorge where it had been lying for about 40 years. Thanks to modern technology, the images were restored and their owner was identified.

According to Bild, the film was developed by cinematographer Paolo Bacchi. Despite significant damage, artificial intelligence was used to improve the quality of the photographs.

To find the people pictured in the photos, Bacchi posted a video on social media. It garnered over four million views, after which Renata Nardinozzi reached out.

She recognized her husband in the photos—the renowned Italian mountaineer and head of the Alpine Rescue Service, Tiziano Cantalamessa, who died during a climb in 1999.

As it turned out, the photos were taken during mountaineering training sessions in 1986–1987. According to his widow, the discovery gave their family an unexpected opportunity to see her husband and their children’s father again, decades after his death.
