A boat carrying migrants caught fire in the English Channel while attempting to cross the strait. A total of 162 people were rescued from the vessel, according to French rescue services.
The incident occurred on the morning of August 4 in the French search-and-rescue zone. According to the maritime prefecture, the engine caught fire during the crossing, causing the boat’s condition to deteriorate very rapidly.
Rescuers initially evacuated five people and later rescued another 157 migrants from the vessel.
French rescue vessels, a French Navy helicopter, British Border Force ships, and other emergency services were involved in the operation. All those rescued are to be taken to the French city of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
