In Latvia, the partial solar eclipse expected on Wednesday, August 12, is best viewed from the coast, where the western horizon is visible. The eclipse will occur during sunset, so buildings in cities and forests in rural areas may block the view, according to LSM English.
Weather news editor Toms Bricis noted that the forecast for the evening of the eclipse is stable: there will be clouds, but they are not expected to be numerous. According to him, choosing the right location is especially important this time, as the Sun will be low on the horizon.
On the coast of the Gulf of Riga in Kurzeme, you can see the sunrise but not the sunset. Therefore, observers are advised to choose the Vidzeme coast between Riga and Ainaži, near the border with Estonia. Visibility may be poorer in Riga itself; Bricis believes that the best view will be in the direction of Karnikava or Lilaste. The eclipse can also be observed on the western coast of Kurzeme—from Kolka to the Lithuanian border.

If you can’t get to the sea, look for safe and accessible upper floors or rooftops with a clear view of the distant horizon. Ophthalmologist Anda Balgalve warned that you must not look at the Sun through binoculars or a telescope: this can cause irreversible damage to your eyes. She also advised against using outdated protection methods, such as smoked glass.
The projection method is considered a safe way to observe the Sun. Amateur astronomer Ints Kešans explained that a telescope or binoculars mounted on a tripod or support should be aimed at the Sun, and the image should be projected onto a white sheet of paper. You must not look directly into the optical instrument.
