Richard Tice, deputy leader of the British Reform UK party, has been criticized for issuing a legal threat against The Guardian. Media organizations and politicians have stated that his lawyers’ actions could jeopardize the confidentiality of journalistic sources, according to The Guardian.
Tice’s lawyers sent a letter to the newspaper’s reporter, Anna Isaac, who had been covering a series of his financial transactions. According to the newspaper, bankers had reported these and other transactions to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) due to concerns about possible money laundering.
Thys filed a lawsuit against the NCA, claiming that the information could only have come from an agency employee. In a separate letter to The Guardian, his lawyers stated that they would seek the disclosure of documents that could reveal details about the publication’s sources. In documents filed with the High Court, Thys also expressed doubt that Isaac could have had sources at several banks at once.

Former Conservative Party Culture Minister John Whittingdale stated that a free press entails the right of journalists to use verified information without being compelled to reveal their sources. Margaret Hodge, a former Labour Party MP and anti-corruption activist, called the potential use of laws to stifle investigative journalism and public criticism unacceptable.
Jemima Steinfeld, Executive Director of Index on Censorship, said that Tice’s actions appear to be an attempt to force the journalist to violate the principle of source protection. Theo Bamber, head of the News Media Association, emphasized that protecting confidential sources is fundamental to the media’s ability to hold those in power and influential figures accountable.
Earlier, The Guardian reported that Reform UK had received a secret donation of 1 million pounds through a fundraising structure managed by Tice. The newspaper also reported on a secret donation of 5 million pounds made to Nigel Farage shortly before he announced his candidacy for the 2024 general election. Farage has also filed a lawsuit against the NCA.
