Australia to Introduce a Bill on Payments by Tech Giants to Media Companies

A bill is set to be introduced in the Australian Parliament that aims to encourage large technology companies to enter into more agreements with news publishers and compensate them for the use of their content. According to The Guardian World, following an agreement between the Labor Party and the Coalition, the bill is expected to gain parliamentary support.

The initiative is called the “news bargaining incentive.” If passed, tech platforms—including Meta, the owner of Facebook—will be required to allocate a portion of their revenue in Australia to support local media.

The political review also notes that following the May budget, the number of new mortgage loans for investors in the country has dropped sharply. At the same time, Finance Minister Jim Chalmers stated that housing prices will continue to rise over the next two years.

Separately, Australia, along with more than 30 other countries—including France, the United Kingdom, and Canada—condemned the use of the death penalty in Iran.
