Participant in Vienība cycling race dies in Latvia
One of the participants in the amateur Vienība cycling race died in Sigulda and its surroundings in Latvia on September 6. This was confirmed by Latvia's Emergency Medical Service, LSM English reports.
Bystanders began providing assistance
Shortly before 3:00 p.m., the service received a report about a cyclist who had lost consciousness. Bystanders began providing first aid following instructions from an Emergency Medical Service dispatcher.
A medical team was dispatched to the scene and took over resuscitation efforts from medical workers on duty at the competition. Resuscitation continued for about half an hour, but the cyclist's life could not be saved.

The cause of death has not yet been established
Igo Japiņš, who was responsible for organizing the race, told the LETA agency that the participant felt unwell while climbing. According to him, a medical examination has not yet been conducted, so it is currently impossible to determine the cause of death.
Japiņš also noted that the organizers had previously not been aware of any possible health problems involving this athlete. According to him, doctors were immediately nearby and did everything possible.
The Vienība cycling race is an amateur competition held in Latvia from 1936 to 1939. It was revived in 1995.
