Latvian border guards find drone used to smuggle cigarettes

On August 30, Latvian border guards found a drone in the Augšdaugava region that, according to LSM English, was used to smuggle cigarettes across the border.

Find in the border area

The drone was found during an inspection of the border area in a forest in Demene Parish. A rectangular box containing contraband cigarettes, wrapped in white polyethylene film, was attached to the underside of the aircraft.

Border guards seized 15,000 NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps. The drone itself was also seized as part of criminal proceedings.

Criminal proceedings

Criminal proceedings were launched over large-scale smuggling under Part One of Article 190 of Latvia's Criminal Law. The source does not report any detention of suspects or other circumstances related to this case.
