In Lithuania, a Latvian citizen was transporting illegal migrants to the border with Poland

In the Lithuanian town of Kalvarija, law enforcement officers detained a Latvian citizen who was transporting four undocumented migrants by car toward the Polish border.

This was reported by Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT).

According to the border guard service, the woman was attempting to transport the people from Latvia to Poland via Lithuania.

There were four Afghan nationals in the carthree men aged 21, 22, and 43—all without documents; another man was found in the trunk.

The incident was discovered by a border guard who was off duty at the time. He notified his colleagues, after which a patrol quickly arrived at the scene and detained the vehicle.

All individuals involved in the incident were taken to the border checkpoint in Kalvarija.

The identities of the three migrants were preliminarily confirmed using passport photos found on their phones. The fourth man had no documents.

According to preliminary information, the foreigners arrived in Belarus by plane, illegally crossed the border, ended up in Latvia, and from there attempted to reach Poland via Lithuania.

The detained woman stated that she agreed to transport the migrants to the border for a fee of 850 euros per passenger.

Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the case, including the possible organizers of the human smuggling scheme.

The day before, Lithuanian border guards detained 18 illegal migrants who had entered the country through a tunnel dug from the Belarusian side under the border fence.

Lithuania has extendedsanctions against Russians and Belarusians until 2027.
