Switzerland has decided to abandon the Patriot system due to delays
The Swiss Federal Council has initiated negotiations with manufacturers in France, Israel, and South Korea regarding the procurement of additional air defense systems. This decision was prompted by a four- to five-year delay in the delivery of five previously ordered American Patriot systems, as the United States has prioritized supplying Ukraine.
The country’s defense ministry emphasized the urgent need to strengthen protection against long-range attacks amid the deteriorating global geopolitical situation. The new procurement is intended to diversify supply sources and reduce Bern’s strategic dependence on a single arms manufacturer. At the same time, Switzerland is not abandoning its initial plans and has already resumed previously suspended financial payments to the U.S. under the contract for the Patriot systems.
