The EU will try to persuade Hungary to lift its veto on Ukraine's accession clusters

UA NEWS 24 June 2026 16:21
The EU will try to persuade Hungary to lift its veto on Ukraine's accession clusters

On Friday, June 26, the EU Council’s Working Group on Enlargement will reconsider the approval of the screening results for Clusters 2–6 for Ukraine and Moldova, which Hungary had previously blocked.

At the June 23 meeting, Budapest refused to approve the results, citing an alleged need for additional time for evaluation—a move diplomats currently interpret as technical reservations rather than a complete block.

If Hungary withdraws its reservations, the Cypriot Presidency is ready to immediately add the issue to the agenda of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives on the same day. Withdrawing the reservations will allow the EU to send official letters to Ukraine and Moldova inviting them to present their negotiating positions for the further opening of these clusters at the Intergovernmental Conference.

This was reported by European Truth, citing anonymous sources among officials and diplomats in Brussels.

Hungary blocked the procedural decision necessary to open new negotiation clusters regarding Ukraine’s and Moldova’s accession to the European Union. As a result, the plan to open the remaining negotiation clusters by mid-July is now at risk.

Hungary pushed to remove language regarding Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU from the final declaration of the European Union summit.
