Lithuania has approved an excavation at Vilnius Cathedral to search for Vytautas's burial site
The Lithuanian government has approved a plan for comprehensive archaeological and scientific research at Vilnius Cathedral, aimed at compiling a complete picture of the historical burials and verifying hypotheses regarding the location of Grand Duke Vytautas’s grave.
A specialized working group led by Ingrida Kutkienė concluded that no systematic surveys of this historic site had been conducted, noting that the findings will help counter historical falsifications by hostile states.
In addition to conducting search and research work in the cathedral’s basilica, the government has tasked the Ministry of Culture with creating a pantheon of Lithuania’s prominent statesmen on its grounds.
