A monument to Lesya Ukrainka was unveiled in Madrid
A monument to the outstanding Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka has been unveiled in Madrid, the capital of Spain. The monument was erected in Plaza de Lesya Ukrainka, a square named in her honor, next to the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain.
The unveiling of the monument coincided with the 155th anniversary of Lesya Ukrainka’s birth. The sculpture was created by Mykola Obezuk, an Honored Artist of Ukraine.
The idea to erect the monument first arose in 2018. Subsequently, thanks to the collaboration between the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain and the Ukrainian diaspora, the Madrid City Council decided in 2020 to name one of the city’s squares in honor of Lesya Ukrainka. The Ukrainian Association for Foreign Policy and the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain coordinated the project’s implementation.
As noted, over the past five years, monuments and memorials to Lesya Ukrainka have also been erected in Hungary and France. In Ukraine, a memorial plaque to the writer was unveiled in Shepetivka, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, and a monument was erected in Odesa.
UNESCO calls Lesya Ukrainka one of the world’s most famous figures of Ukrainian culture. In 2021, the organization joined in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the writer’s birth.

As a reminder, in Kovel, Volyn Oblast, representatives of the city government and the public laid flowers at the monument to Lesya Ukrainka. The event took place on July 31, on the eve of the 113th anniversary of the death of the outstanding Ukrainian poet, writer, and cultural figure. Participants honored the memory of a woman whose words have become a symbol of strength of spirit, love for Ukraine, and the struggle for freedom.
