A state of emergency has been declared in Munich, Germany, due to an acute water shortage. Local authorities have urged residents to reduce their water consumption as much as possible and to use water only when absolutely necessary.
Record-breaking heat and a prolonged drought have led to a drop in groundwater levels.
Munich Mayor Dominik Krause has established a task force to ensure the careful use of the remaining water reserves.
“We are facing an emergency situation not seen since the early 1970s. The demand for water, which has risen significantly due to the prolonged heatwave, is pushing Munich’s municipal water supply system to its limits. Therefore, as a city, we will immediately take measures to conserve water,” he said.
However, the supply of drinking water is currently secure. To ensure it remains so, city officials have announced drastic cuts—even window washing will be suspended.
At least ten of the city’s 150 decorative fountains will be shut off.
According to city officials, this will save 43% of the total water consumption of all fountains. In addition, the operating hours of 56 fountains will be reduced from 14 to 10 hours per day.
In addition, the city’s public utilities are offering advice to Munich residents on how to reduce their water consumption: avoid washing cars, take showers instead of baths, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, and refrain from filling children’s and adult swimming pools.
“I ask all Munich residents to help conserve water. Every liter saved helps alleviate the situation,” Krause wrote.
He also added that if water consumption does not decrease, more drastic measures will have to be taken. The mayor did not specify exactly what those measures might be.
