The fourth BRICS+ Fashion Summit was held in Moscow on September 28–30, bringing together representatives of the fashion industry from more than 60 countries. It was attended by designers, brands, manufacturers, suppliers and retailers, including those from Brazil, South Africa, Vietnam and Morocco. As Channel NewsAsia reports, the event was dedicated to promoting emerging fashion markets and establishing international business ties.

New contacts for designers

The summit became a platform for finding new talent, trends and collections beyond traditional fashion centers such as Paris and Milan. The publication notes that international production ties increasingly connect different countries: for example, a collection may be created in India, purchased by a Russian company, and manufactured in China.

Indian designer Kanika Goyal, founder and creative director of Kanika Goyal Label, presented a collection in Moscow for the first time. She had previously shown her work in New York and Paris. Goyal said she welcomes broader international representation of specialists from different countries, as it makes it possible to meet creative professionals and exchange views.

The Russian market and Chinese production

In Russia, an aggressor state, brands from other markets are filling the niche left after Western companies scaled back or suspended operations because of the country’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This concerns both mass-market chains Zara and H&M and luxury fashion houses Chanel and Gucci.

Russian designer Alyona Kritskaya said such summits give local brands contacts and opportunities for cooperation with China. According to her, participants in the Made in Moscow program receive support from the Moscow government, an authority of the aggressor state Russia, including information on cooperation with Chinese partners and organized trips to production facilities in China.

Shan Wei, founder and design director of the Chinese brand MOMIWEI, said the show could enable the company to establish contacts with potential franchise partners. He also said that the brand plans to open a store in Moscow.
