About 60 people were detained at a Communist rally in Moscow

A Communist Party rally took place in the Russian capital, during which law enforcement officers detained about 60 participants. According to reports, the protesters chanted the slogans “Down with the Tsar” and “For fair elections.”

The rally was held to mark the anniversary of the shelling of the White House in Moscow in October 1993 — at that time, during the standoff between President Boris Yeltsin and parliament, Russian tanks fired on the House of Soviets (White House), where supporters of parliament had barricaded themselves.

According to media reports, approximately 2,000 people attended the anniversary rally, which had been previously approved by the authorities. However, when they began chanting slogans against the ruling “United Russia” party and shouting “For fair elections,” “Down with the Tsar,” “No to Political Repression,” and “Freedom for Political Prisoners,” police officers began detaining people.

In total, 26 members of the Communist Party, about 30 members of the “Yabloko” party, and several other activists were detained. Witnesses also reported violence by law enforcement officers.

“We saw a person lying on the ground, surrounded by people, while law enforcement officers were kicking him. Eventually, they dragged him away. They grabbed a woman by the hair; she screamed. It was horrific—just like in 1993,” they said.

Earlier in Moscow, a general responsible for the logistical support of the troops was arrested.

As a reminder, Colonel General Alexander Lapin, the former commander of the Russian “Center” and “North” military groups, became deputy prime minister of Tatarstan.

Three generals have been removed from their posts in the Russian Federation’s rear over the past two years.
