NATO has explained who stands to gain the most from Russia's prolonged war against Ukraine

The prolongation of Russia’s war against Ukraine is most in line with China’s interests, as China seeks to weaken Western powers while simultaneously exhausting Russia itself. A NATO representative made this assessment while commenting on the geopolitical implications of the protracted conflict for global security.

This was stated by former Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Rob Bauer in an interview with DW.

Rob Bauer emphasized Beijing’s pragmatism, noting that by adopting a wait-and-see stance, China is only strengthening its position amid global instability. China’s strategy is not to support the victory of one side, but to exhaust all key geopolitical rivals.

“China is interested in weakening Europe and the U.S., and to a certain extent, Russia itself. The longer the war lasts, the more beneficial it is for China: we are spending vast sums of money and resources to support Ukraine, while Russia is expending enormous resources and human lives to wage this war,” the admiral emphasized.

Rob Bauer drew attention to Beijing’s diplomatic rhetoric, which clearly indicates a lack of interest in a swift end to the war in Russia’s favor.

“It is interesting that China, for example, stated a few months ago that a Russian defeat is unacceptable to it. At the same time, they did not say that Russia must necessarily win. And that speaks volumes,” noted the former chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

The admiral concluded that in a situation where world leaders are focused on security challenges, China effectively remains the only party reaping strategic benefits from the current state of affairs.

“And the only one who actually comes out ahead is China,” Bauer concluded.
