A drone attacked the area around the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE — Wall Street Journal
An unidentified drone attacked a facility near the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates. According to preliminary reports, the strike caused a power generator to catch fire; details regarding the extent of the damage are still being determined.
This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The IAEA was informed by the UAE that radiation levels at the Barakah NPP remain normal after a drone strike this morning caused a fire in an electric generator located near the plant, according to an IAEA statement.
It is noted that emergency diesel generators are currently providing electricity to the plant’s third unit.
“The IAEA is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant contact with the UAE authorities and stands ready to provide assistance if needed,” the agency added.
It is worth noting that the UAE has not disclosed who launched the drone. It is noted that the four reactors at the Barakah NPP provide about a quarter of the country’s electricity needs.
“Today’s attack on the perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE, during which a drone struck a power generator, is absolutely unacceptable. Ukraine strongly condemns any attacks that threaten the safety of nuclear facilities,” stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga.
According to him, Ukraine has been subjected to targeted Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure—including nuclear facilities—for over four years, which continues to pose serious risks to the civilian population, the region, and the entire world.
“The protection of nuclear facilities around the world is critically important and must be guaranteed without exception,” the minister emphasized.
Oil prices have fallen due to the UAE’s withdrawal from OPEC and tensionssurrounding Iran.
As a reminder, OPEC oil exports plummeted to a record low in March.
Earlier, OPEC+ agreed to a minimally symbolic increase in oil production amid the war in Iran, starting in May 2026.
