Heavy rains cause floods and landslides in Nepal — Kathmandu Post
Prolonged heavy rains in Nepal have caused floods and landslides in several regions of the country. In the city of Butwal, flooding on the Tinau River swept away six houses along the bank on Saturday evening, while about 1,000 people were evacuated due to rising water levels in the river and nearby streams, Kathmandu Post reports.
The Tinau exceeded its danger level at around 8 p.m. on Saturday. About 200 riverside homes in Butwal are at risk. Authorities initially moved around 500 residents of the Majhuwa area to a temporary site at the Durga temple and later relocated them to safer locations, including schools in Butwal.
Rivers exceeded danger levels
In Chitwan district, the Narayani River and the Riu stream exceeded danger levels due to the rains. At the Devghat hydrological station, the Narayani reached 9.23 metres, while its danger level is 9 metres. The Riu stood at 3.92 metres, compared with its danger level of 3.8 metres.
Flooding also affected the districts of Nawalparasi West and Saptari. In the Susta rural municipality, 172 families were relocated on Friday and Saturday after the Narayani entered settlements. In Saptari, 200 families from Hanumannagar Kankalini municipality and 17 families from Tilathi Koiladi rural municipality were moved to safe locations. In total, water flooded 389 houses in these two districts.

In Susta's fifth ward, up to 271 homes and animal shelters were flooded, with water reaching about 90 centimetres in some residences. In Saptari, flooding inundated 217 houses: 17 in Tilathi Koiladi and 200 in Hanumannagar Kankalini.
Landslides blocked roads
Landslides and mudslides disrupted traffic on roads in Chitwan, including the Narayanghat–Muglin route. Roads were completely blocked in several places, while traffic was reduced to one lane on some sections. Police said that the connection between Narayanghat and Pokhara could be restored in about two hours if no new obstacles emerge and debris clearing continues uninterrupted.
The risk of floods and landslides also persists in the Karnali region, where water levels in several rivers continued to rise. Landslides blocked the Nagma–Gamgadhi road in Mugu district, the Karnali Highway in Kalikot, and sections of the Karnali transport corridor in Humla district. Local authorities urged residents of areas prone to flooding and landslides to monitor the situation and move to safe locations if necessary.
