Twelve hospital employees in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, have been placed under a six-week quarantine after violating safety protocols while handling test samples from a patient infected with the hantavirus.
This was reported by the AP.
It has been confirmed that the infected patient was a passenger on the cruise ship MV Hondius, on board which an outbreak of the Andean strain of hantavirus was detected.
The hospital stated that it will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident to prevent such cases from recurring.
According to the World Health Organization, nine cases of infection with this strain have been confirmed so far. The ship, from which passengers were evacuated, is heading to the Netherlands for complete disinfection.
The Health Center provided advice on how to protect oneself from hantavirus.
The head of the WHO noted that hantavirus is not a new form of COVID.
