In Nigeria, PDP backs Wike’s coalition in support of Tinubu’s re-election
In Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said that its member and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, may remain in the party while mobilizing support through the Rainbow Coalition for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria.
PDP National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed said in a statement that Wike has a constitutional and democratic right to independently choose a candidate for political support. According to him, support for Tinubu does not contradict Wike’s PDP membership, as he is a current appointee of the president.
Dispute with APC governors
The creation of the Rainbow Coalition has caused disagreements between Wike and governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The dispute emerged amid claims that the minister is using the platform to support politicians who lost APC primaries and are now running under the PDP.
The APC Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, opposed political coalitions or alliances that, in its view, could weaken the party and its candidates ahead of the 2027 elections. Uzodimma, who is also secretary of Tinubu’s Campaign Council, said that participation in such an association could harm Tinubu’s campaign for a second presidential term.

PDP’s position
Mohammed rejected the APC governors’ claims and said their opposition to Wike’s political activity was driven by fears of electoral defeat. He maintains that some governors have shown weak performance and failed to meet the expectations of their communities.
The PDP representative also said that Wike’s support for Tinubu does not mean he is abandoning the PDP or conceding political space to the APC. According to him, every party has the democratic right to field candidates, while the PDP has stabilized and has candidates capable of competing with APC representatives in 2027.
The PDP called on APC governors to focus on governance, accountability, and the funds states receive through FAAC. Mohammed described Wike as a political mobilizer who, in his assessment, could make a significant contribution to Tinubu’s election campaign.
