Three federal schools in Nigeria’s Rivers State did not resume classes due to protest
In Nigeria’s Rivers State, three federal schools did not resume the educational process at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year due to a workers’ protest. On Monday and Tuesday, students, parents and guardians arrived at the institutions on the scheduled days for classes to resume, but the school gates remained closed, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
Which institutions were closed
The schools concerned are the Federal Government College in Port Harcourt, the Federal Government Girls’ College in Abuloma, and the Federal Science and Technical College in Ahoada.
According to Nigeria’s National News Agency, the closures are linked to a trade union protest against the concessioning of King’s College in Lagos to its alumni association. Protesters also closed federal unity schools in other parts of the country, disrupting the planned resumption of the educational process.

Statement by the parents’ association
Ominina Bibi, chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association of the Federal Government Girls’ College in Abuloma, said that on Monday trade union members did not allow students, parents and guardians to enter the institution’s premises.
According to him, access to the school was temporarily restricted due to a peaceful protest by the school staff union over an internal administrative issue affecting unity schools across Nigeria. Bibi called on parents and guardians to remain calm and patient. He also said that the association’s executive committee is monitoring the situation and hopes for a peaceful resolution, after which students will be able to begin their studies.
