Nigerian university lifts professor’s suspension after post about salaries
The management of Abia State University in Nigeria has lifted the suspension of economics professor Nnamdi Nwaeze. He was previously removed from work after a Facebook post about the level of professors’ salaries at the institution.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, in a letter dated September 3, the university’s acting registrar, Joy Nwankwo, stated that the decision was made following a written appeal from ASUU-ABSU, the university’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The suspension was lifted with immediate effect.
The investigation continues
At the same time, the university administration stated that lifting the suspension does not stop the work of the commission considering allegations of possible violations by the lecturer. According to Nwankwo, the management is still awaiting the commission’s final report.

In August, Nwaeze wrote on Facebook that professors at Abia State University receive less than 400,000 naira per month. His post concerned a strike that the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the university had declared at that time.
Nwaeze’s statements
The professor thanked the people who supported him and opposed the suspension. At the same time, he called the reversal of the decision temporary relief, as the university continues its investigation.
Nwaeze also stated that he considers his initial suspension politically motivated. According to him, over the past two to three years, he has undergone several investigations, none of which found him guilty. The professor claims that he committed no violations against the university or the Abia State government, and also expressed concerns for his personal safety at the university and in the state.
