Deaths in Germany Have Surged Due to the Heat Wave

In Germany, the number of deaths rose sharply during a severe heat wave in late June. In just one week, more than 5,500 additional people died in the country compared to the usual number during this period in recent years.

Experts suggest that the abnormal temperatures may have been one of the reasons for this increase, but it is not yet possible to directly link every death to the heat.

According to official data, 23,655 people died in the country between June 22 and 28. This is 5,655 more than the average for the same week over the past three years. Doctors note that hot weather is particularly dangerous for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. High temperatures can worsen health conditions and trigger flare-ups of existing problems.

At the same time, Alexander Lechleitner, medical director of Cologne’s emergency medical services, urged people not to jump to conclusions. “There’s no doubt that high temperatures have an impact, but the extent of that impact often remains unclear,” he said.

According to Lechleitner, determining the exact cause of death can be difficult, especially when it comes to the elderly or patients with serious illnesses. “It is particularly difficult to establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship in cases involving the elderly or patients with chronic illnesses,” the doctor explained.

In Germany, as in other European countries, prolonged periods of high temperatures have been recorded with increasing frequency in recent years. Experts emphasize that heat waves are becoming one of the factors that can influence mortality rates, especially among the most vulnerable population groups. This is evidenced by preliminary data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, as cited by Spiegel.

On the sidelines of the NATO summit on July 8, Ukraine and Germany signed an agreement to implement a joint project to produce BARS unmanned aerial vehicles. The initiative aims to expand defense cooperation between the two countries and strengthen the capabilities of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex.
