NATO declined to hold its next summit in Albania
NATO countries did not finalize an agreement to hold the next Alliance summit in Albania. The relevant clause was removed from the final declaration of the NATO leaders’ meeting in Ankara.
It had previously been expected that the next summit would take place in Albania, but no final decision was included in the document summarizing the talks. The reasons for this move have not yet been officially announced.
The final clause of the document states that the leaders of the member states “look forward to the next meeting.”
This phrasing breaks with tradition, as it mentions neither the year nor the location of the next NATO summit. It should be noted that last year’s decision concluded with the words: “We look forward to our next meeting in Turkey in 2026, and then to a meeting in Albania.”
And while the allies had agreed from the outset not to specify the year of the meeting in Albania—leaving themselves room to maneuver—the location was already considered confirmed. However, the U.S. side opposed holding the summit in Albania and blocked that phrase in the Ankara summit resolution.
This is evidenced by a document in the possession of “EuroPravda.”
Zelenskyy met with Meloni on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
As a reminder, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated that he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a leaders’ dinner on the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s initial remarks at the NATO summit in Ankara caused concern among allies and forced them to reassess their expectations for the meeting.
