Video: China Has Begun Cooling Cities with Artificial Water Mist

In the Chinese city of Yuncheng, a cooling system has been launched that sprays a fine mist of water over residential neighborhoods. The technology is used to combat the “urban heat island” effect during the summer heat.

The system is installed on the roofs of high-rise buildings. Water is sprayed under high pressure, evaporates quickly, and absorbs heat from the surrounding air. As a result, temperatures between buildings, in courtyards, and near building facades can drop by 5–8°C.

The technology does not cool the interior directly, but rather reduces the heating of exterior surfaces, causing buildings and asphalt to accumulate less heat during the day and release it more slowly at night.

At the same time, experts note that the system works most effectively in regions with a dry climate. In high humidity, the cooling effect weakens, and large-scale use of such systems would require significant amounts of water.
