Germany has criticized the decision to bar journalists from the G20 meeting in the U.S.
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil criticized the U.S. Treasury Department’s decision not to grant accreditation to certain journalists from leading American media outlets for the G20 finance ministers’ meeting.
As previously reported, certain reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg were denied accreditation for the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, without any explanation for the denial.
“I consider it unacceptable for journalists—or entire newsrooms—to be excluded from this event,” said the German finance minister.
Klingbeil emphasized that he is “a staunch supporter of a free and independent press.”
“I believe the press has a perfectly legitimate interest in openly and freely covering this G20 meeting,” the German minister added.
He made these remarks while speaking with journalists, according to Reuters.
Bessent: G20 countries should consider additional trade barriers against China.
The U.S. Treasury Department did not grant accreditation to certain journalists for the G20 summit.
