An unusual preschool called Kinderoase has opened in Munich, featuring wooden slides that connect all floors of the building. The facility was created for employees of the Technical University of Munich to help them balance work with childcare.

The project was designed by the architectural firm Kéré Architecture in collaboration with the Austrian company HK Architekten, which specializes in timber construction. The building is almost entirely made of wood—the only exceptions are the foundation and the emergency staircase.

The five-story daycare center is designed to accommodate 60 children. Each age group occupies a separate floor, while the reception area and administrative offices are located on the first floor.

Common areas for play, sports, and meals are located on the middle and upper floors. A partially covered terrace called “Sky Meadow” was also created on the building’s roof.

According to Francis Kéré, founder of Kéré Architecture, creating a space for the youngest children was a particularly significant responsibility for him.

“My very first projects were designed for schoolchildren, and now I’m building for the youngest children. It’s a great responsibility,” the architect noted.

The kindergarten’s interior is also made entirely of wood. The furniture and storage systems were crafted from wood because, according to research, natural materials have a positive impact on children’s well-being and development.

One of the building’s most striking features is a spiral yellow staircase, and the main attraction is the specially designed wooden slides that children can use to move between floors.

This was reported by The Architect’s Newspaper.
