A Ukrainian man has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of spying for Russia

The German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced the arrest of Ukrainian citizen Vitaliy M., who is suspected of gathering information for Russian intelligence.

The arrest took place on March 27, 2026, in the city of Hagen, and the following day, the Federal Court issued a warrant for the suspect’s detention. The investigation established that, since at least November 2025, the accused had been carrying out instructions from Russian intelligence agencies, monitoring a Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemember who was residing in Germany at the time.

According to the prosecution’s preliminary version, the collected data was to be used to prepare further intelligence operations against the Ukrainian servicemember. The Hagen police are currently investigating the case and establishing all the circumstances of the suspect’s activities. This arrest is part of a broader effort to counter foreign espionage within the country, aimed at protecting participants in combat operations. In this way, law enforcement agencies prevented potential threats to the safety of the individual who was being illegally monitored in the interests of the aggressor state.

Earlier, British law enforcement officials formally charged two men with spying for China.

Meanwhile, in Germany, Federal Prosecutor General Jens Rommel arrested three suspected spies who may have been passing information about military technology to the Chinese intelligence service.
