The U.S. has allowed Maduro to pay his lawyers using frozen assets

U.S. authorities have allowed former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife to use frozen assets to pay for legal representation.

This was reported by Voice of Emirates.

The decision involves amendments to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) licenses, which allow for the funding of attorneys despite sanctions.

It is noted that due to previous restrictions, the trial in the U.S. was effectively blocked, as the defense argued that the right to a fair trial had been violated.

Following this decision, the defendants agreed to withdraw their motion to dismiss the case, paving the way for the trial to proceed.

A new phase of the trial on drug trafficking charges is expected to begin in New York in the near future.

Nicolás Maduro has served as president of Venezuela since 2013, following the death of Hugo Chávez, with whom he had a long-standing political partnership.

Maduro may be held in a New York detention center during the trial.
