The number of attacks on politicians in Germany has risen by nearly 40%
Over the past year, Germany has seen a significant increase in crimes against members of political parties—by nearly 40%.
This is according to the federal government’s response to a parliamentary inquiry from the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) faction, Tagesschau reports.
The highest number of incidents was recorded involving representatives of the AfD and CDU parties.
As noted, in 2025, the police recorded 5,140 crimes against representatives and members of political parties. For comparison: in 2024, there were 3,690 such cases, and in 2023, 2,790.
The government attributes the sharp increase, in particular, to the tense atmosphere during the election campaign in early 2025.
The highest number of incidents last year was recorded against representatives of the AfD—1,852 cases. According to police data, most of them are linked to the far-left radical milieu.
The number of offenses against CDU representatives also rose sharply: while about 420 cases were recorded in 2024, there were already 1,171 in 2025. Another 168 offenses involved CSU members.
The statistics also include property damage, graffiti on politicians’ homes, and disturbances near party information stands.
