The 18th BRICS summit begins in New Delhi
The two-day 18th summit of BRICS leaders began in India’s capital, New Delhi, on September 12. It is attended by leaders and senior officials of the expanded grouping of 11 countries. The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of the US-Iran war, which, according to Anadolu Agency, has been ongoing for a seventh month, as well as the fifth year of Russia’s war — an aggressor state — against Ukraine.
The agency notes that the conflict between the United States and Iran has caused an energy crisis and heightened concerns about energy security, trade and inflation. On the eve of the summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed hope that the discussions would be positive and substantive. China stated its intention to work with other BRICS countries to promote dialogue and negotiations to resolve differences and maintain regional and global peace and stability.
Summit participants
BRICS includes Brazil, the Russian Federation — an aggressor state, India, China, South Africa, as well as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Summit participants include Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

Brazil is represented by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, while Saudi Arabia is represented by Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. Partner countries have also joined the format, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Meeting agenda
On the first day, a closed session of member states is planned on inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateralism. Participants will also visit the Bharat Innovates exhibition, take part in a tree-planting ceremony and attend a gala dinner hosted by Modi.
On the second day, an open session will be held on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainable development for inclusive global growth. The leaders are expected to issue a joint statement. According to BRICS, the grouping represents about 49.5% of the world’s population, 40% of global GDP and 26% of global trade.
