The 81st Session of the UN General Assembly Will Open in New York: What We Know So Far
On Tuesday, September 8, the 81st session of the General Assembly will begin at United Nations Headquarters in New York, under the presidency of Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh. The main themes of the session are rebuilding trust, strengthening international cooperation, and accelerating sustainable development.
The general debate, featuring heads of state and government, will take place from September 22 to 28.
The program of high-level events includes discussions on climate change, pandemic response, protection against the effects of rising sea levels, and nuclear disarmament. In addition, diplomatic meetings during the session may serve as a platform for negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. According to a U.S. administration official, the United States is ready for the next round of dialogue involving Moscow and Kyiv, building on the progress made in previous contacts.

Ukraine did not support the UN resolution on a new cartographic projection of the world because the proposed map inaccurately depicts the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. In particular, Crimea is shown on the map as separate from Ukraine.
