In Pakistan, 160 schools issued notices over exam results — Dawn
In Rawalpindi, Pakistan, the district education authority issued show-cause notices to teachers and principals of 160 schools where the share of students who passed the Grade 9 exam was about 20%. Disciplinary proceedings were launched against 40 schools with a zero result, Dawn reports.
A total of 124,430 candidates applied for the 2026 annual examination conducted by the Rawalpindi Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education. Some 121,739 students took the exam, of whom 45,724 passed. The overall pass rate was 37.56%, while 76,015 participants failed the exam.
Measures concerning schools
Yasin Khan Baloch, chief executive officer of the district education authority, said that measures had been taken against those responsible for Grade 9 classes and school principals. According to him, teachers from 40 schools were suspended from work under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act.

After the results were announced, training sessions for teachers began to improve students' preparation for the annual Grade 9 examinations. Assistant commissioners were tasked with monitoring the situation in schools, while the deputy commissioner ordered special attention to be paid to teaching Grade 9 and Grade 10 students in public schools.
Position of educators and experts
Teachers called on the authorities not to involve school educators in anti-polio, dengue and other campaigns so that they could focus on teaching. They also said that school closures due to the security situation interrupt the educational process and stressed the need to improve the provision of public schools.
Education experts expressed concern about the results and demanded a comprehensive and impartial review of examination, assessment and paper-checking policies in Rawalpindi. According to comparative data they cited, the average pass rate among Punjab education boards was 45.17%, meaning Rawalpindi's result was lower by 7.61 percentage points and ranked last among the nine boards covered by the comparison.
