Najib Naqi elected president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan — Dawn

In Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, Dr Najib Naqi of the ruling PML-N party was elected the new president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Dawn reports.

Voting results

In the September 24 election at the Secretariat of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Naqi received 32 votes. His opponent, Chaudhry Latif Akbar of the PPP, received 13 votes.

Voting began at 11:00 and ended at 13:00. Under the constitution of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the president is elected by members of the Legislative Assembly by a majority of its total membership.

Position vacant since January

The presidential post had remained vacant since January following the death of Barrister Sultan Mahmood. Previously, the duties of president were performed by the then speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Chaudhry Latif Akbar.

After Tariq Farooq, who currently holds the position, was elected speaker of the Legislative Assembly on August 25, the duties of president passed to him.
