Historic Nehru Park in Lahore, Pakistan, to be restored
In Lahore, Pakistan, the Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) has decided to restore the historic Nehru Park in the Krishan Nagar area. The work will combine landscaping and upgrades to the park’s infrastructure, Dawn reports.
Historical significance of the park
On December 31, 1929, the Indian National Congress adopted the “Purna Swaraj” (“Complete Independence”) resolution during its historic Lahore session on the park’s grounds. The document demanded complete self-government for India and a final break with British rule.
Jawaharlal Nehru, then president of the Congress, raised the Indian flag at the site as a symbol of the proclamation. The resolution rejected the dominion status proposed by Britain under the 1929 Irwin Declaration and called for complete independence. It sparked a nationwide movement that culminated in the Declaration of Independence on January 26, 1930; the date was later observed as India’s first Independence Day.

Landscaping and infrastructure
According to PHA Director General Ahmad Usman Javed, the park will be sown with green grass and planted with seasonal flowers. An engineering team is to install nighttime lighting, benches, and children’s swings to make the space more convenient for family recreation.
The authority has already repaired the park’s boundary wall, planted ornamental plants inside and outside its grounds, and installed a cricket pavilion. Several decorative fountains are also planned there.
Javed said that the PHA aims to preserve the park’s historical character while restoring it as a green public space for residents. The restoration is part of a broader plan to reconstruct and repair more than 800 small public parks in Lahore under the PHA’s jurisdiction. Students and civil society representatives are also expected to be involved in the process.
