Competition organizer Hyrox carried out sanitation cleanup after an incident during a fitness race in Beijing, China: a participant continued the course after soiling herself in the middle of the competition. A video of the athlete spread on social media and sparked disputes over hygiene and the organizers’ actions, BBC News reports.

German company Hyrox said it launched a large-scale cleanup operation after Saturday’s competition. In particular, the organizers disinfected equipment and replaced part of the carpet covering.
The company acknowledged that participants’ concerns were justified while urging people not to direct their outrage at the athlete. Hyrox did not name her, but her name was shared online, after which the woman received threats of violence.

In a statement on Monday, the organization said it would permanently ban from all Hyrox events people identified as making threats or calls to harm the athlete.
Participants’ complaints and the Hyrox format
Some participants in the Beijing competition demanded an apology and refunds, saying they had to come into contact with contaminated equipment. Race participant Joe Ho called on the organizers to take responsibility for procedural shortcomings and consider compensation for people affected.
In Hyrox competitions, participants alternate one-kilometer runs with exercises including sled pushes, burpee jumps, rowing on a machine and lunges with a sandbag. The format was founded in Hamburg in 2017 and debuted in mainland China in late 2024. Due to high demand, the latest competition in Beijing was extended to four days.
