Daily Maverick in South Africa publishes reader photo selection for September 5–11
In South Africa, Daily Maverick published a weekly selection of photographs by subscribers to the First Thing newsletter for the period from September 5 to 11, 2026. The gallery includes images of the night sky, natural scenes, animals and still-life photography.

Among the published works is a photograph of the Milky Way in Kagga Kamma, taken by Emil Grundling at 2 a.m. Caroline Lotz presented a morning landscape, while Gill Green submitted a photograph titled “Golden Path to the Sun.”
The selection also features works by Kobus Steyn, Caroline Rowbottom, Jannes Beyers, Ernst Kalitz, Rens Rezelman and Hugh Fraser. Photograph of plastic under polarized light
Tian Olivier submitted a work titled “Stress in Plastic.” The caption states that a torn fragment of a plastic bag was photographed under crossed polarized light at fourfold magnification. According to the description, the bright colors in the image resulted from internal stresses in the material.
The First Thing editorial team accepts photographs from subscribers through a link in the “Photo of the Day” section. The publication limits its weekly selection to a maximum of 20 works, asks contributors to submit landscape-format images at the highest possible resolution, and stresses that authors retain all rights to their work.
