52-year-old man detained in South Africa on suspicion of heroin — MyJoyOnline

In South Africa, a 52-year-old South African citizen was detained at O. R. Tambo International Airport after police found substances in his luggage that, according to preliminary data, may be heroin. The value of the seized substances on the illegal market is estimated at more than 2 million rand, MyJoyOnline reports.

Operation at the airport

The detention took place on Sunday, September 20, during an intelligence-led operation. The South African Police Service and the Border Management Authority took part in it.

According to police, the man arrived on a flight from Accra, the capital of Ghana. During an inspection of his luggage, law enforcement officers allegedly found items resembling bullets and blocks containing substances that may contain heroin.

The investigation continues

This is already the third detention of a suspected drug courier at O. R. Tambo International Airport over the past three weeks. Law enforcement agencies have stepped up operations against illegal drug trafficking.

The detainee is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court later this week. He may face charges related to drug trafficking. Police continue to establish the origin of the seized substances and are checking the man's possible connection to a broader drug trafficking network.
