Former ISIS member sentenced to 30 years in Paris — Asharq Al-Awsat
A special court in Paris sentenced 32-year-old French national Othman Garrido, a former member of the Islamic State (ISIS) group in Syria, to 30 years in prison for murders committed as part of an organized group. As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, the verdict was announced on September 22 after a week-long trial.
The case involving two Iranian citizens
Garrido was found guilty in the case of the public execution of two Iranian citizens in Syria in September 2015. At the same time, the court acquitted him of a separate charge that he was directly responsible for carrying out the execution.

The sentence includes a 20-year period without eligibility for parole. During the hearings, Garrido claimed that he had been forced to carry out ISIS orders because otherwise he risked being killed himself.
Participation of French citizens in ISIS
According to the outlet, about 1,500 French citizens passed through Iraq and Syria in the 2010s to join ISIS. In 2014, the group attempted to create an entity in Syrian territory that it called a “caliphate,” but it was defeated in 2019 by a US-led international coalition.
