Mertza's party has elected a new secretary-general of the CDU
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party of Germany’s current Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has elected a new secretary-general. The position was filled by 44-year-old Bundestag member Franziska Hoppermann.
Friedrich Merz himself proposed Hoppermann’s candidacy. The CDU’s Federal Executive Committee unanimously supported her appointment as the party’s secretary-general.
Hoppermann’s appointment to this position is to be finalized at the next Christian Democratic Union convention.
The new CDU secretary-general has not previously been one of the party’s most prominent public figures. She will succeed Carsten Linnemann, who is expected to become Germany’s federal minister of health.
Hoppermann’s appointment is part of a series of personnel changes within the party following the formation of Friedrich Merz’s new government.

As a reminder, Merz’s bloc called for an agreement with Ukraine on the exchange of drone technology.
